Not by Wages Alone: Selected Speeches and Writings of C. V. Devan Nair, 1959-1981

A main achievement of the labour movement in Singapore has been the acquisition by the rank and file of a sense of responsibility. In this and other developments within the movement Devan Nair, or Devan as he is popularly known, continued to play a seminal, central part, contributing to their formulation and implementation with courage, conviction and matching energy. He transformed brilliantly the labour movement from the adversary role it had during the colonial period to one of vigilant, enlightened co-operation whereby the contingent as well as abiding needs of the workers were served within the larger scheme of national needs.
