Speaking about the focus on Vietnamese art in the sale, ANNEXE Founder Wang Zineng says, “The Vietnamese art market is at an inflection point today.” He elaborates, “Between greater institutional recognition of the current crop of contemporary Vietnamese artists and saturated demand for the works of first-generation diaspora artists lies a multi-generational group of artists whose works directly address lived realities in 1960s to mid-1980s pre-Doi Moi Vietnam. These are the artists we are featuring this sale season.”

Arie Smit, Bouquet, 1991, oil on canvas, 40 x 45 cm. Estimate USD10,000 - 20,000.

In its past signature sales, ANNEXE has established record prices for Singapore master potter Iskandar Jalil, and looks set to do the same for Annexe #05. Sarkasi Said, Untitled, batik on cloth, 85 x 142cm. Estimate USD3,000 - 6,000.

Works by contemporary artists are also available. From the Philippines, they include Spolarium (2015) by Cian Dayrit and Untitled (2013) by Buen Calubayan. Both artists have practices that are driven by historical research. Dayrit focuses on unlearning and spreading the word on structural injustices in society. And Calubayan examines the national identity and its contradictions through explorations of the self.
