ANNEXE is holding two sales this month: The SG60 Sale Part II and Annexe #03. The SG60 Sale Part II is now open and will close on 23 November, and Annexe #03 will open on 18 November, and close on 30 November. The auction platform, which had its inaugural sale in January this year, features an innovative auction experience that offers incentives such as no-reserve lots, behaviour-based discounts, and a simpler delivery process.
Founder Wang Zineng created the platform to provide a much-needed service in the art community. “Annexe is focused on serving art collectors’ needs, particularly in buying and divesting. We are laser-focused on being collector and collection-centric,” says Wang. “Everything begins from the art collection: narrative, passion, and knowledge.”
The SG60 Sale Part II features two named private collections, which is rare in the generally discreet secondary art market. “This season, cultural geographer and university don Professor Victor Savage has entrusted us to handle a stunning collection of Singapore ceramics,” says Wang. “Theatre director and filmmaker Glen Goei is also divesting a few beloved pieces to us. Both of them are exemplary collectors led by passion and instinct in building their art collections over decades. It is an honour for ANNEXE to be in lockstep with them in this phase of their collecting journeys.”

From Goei’s collection, there are works by Singapore artists Chua Ek Kay, Henri Chen KeZhan, Tay Bak Chiang and Kumari Nahappan. Chua’s Lotus Pond (2005) has already sold through the “Buy Now” option, which ANNEXE has built into its sales since day one. Other innovative features the platform offers include a 1% off the hammer price for early bidding, within the first week of each sale opening, and 1% off the hammer price for prompt payment made upon the conclusion of each sale.

Goei, who is Associate Artistic Director of Singaporean theatre company WILD RICE emphasises the importance of collecting in relation to his creative practice. “As a theatre director and filmmaker, I want to connect with other artists. I have found that a direct way of doing this is by collecting their art,” he says. “This has helped me to get to know them better, many of whom have even become good friends. Collecting also gives me the opportunity to contribute to the artistic ecosystem which I work in.”

Ceramic collectors can also look forward to lots from the collection of Savage, which include vessels by the ceramist Iskandar Jalil, and the sculptor Ng Eng Teng, both Cultural Medallion recipients. “Every artwork I collect adds a new dimension to my art collection,” quips Savage.

The SG60 Sale Part II also features other consignments, and altogether presents a multi-generational look at Singapore art. They include Chinese ink on paper works by Chen Wen Hsi and Lim Tze Peng. There are also paintings by Jimmy Ong and Goh Beng Kwan. Younger artists, such as Gerald Tay and Priyageetha Dia, are featured as well.

The first part of The SG60 Sale, held in August this year in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of Singapore’s independence, saw an auction record price of SGD11,250 achieved for a work by Iskandar Jalil, which achieved multiples of its range of estimates. Coleman Bridge at Noon (1981) by Ong Kim Seng, consigned to ANNEXE by the Children’s Museum Singapore, fetched SGD17,500, which was a record price for a Singaporean scene by the artist. All in all, the sale saw an 89% sold-by-lot rate, with enthusiastic participation from 72 registered bidders.

Annexe #03, offering 36 lots, will begin later, on 18 November and close at 4pm on 30 November. The flagship sale seeks to capture the pulse of the art market in the Southeast Asian region. For this edition, Indonesian and Philippine art feature strongly. Highlight works include the ink and sculptural works of Indonesian artists Made Wianta and Edhi Sunarso respectively, as well as a photoprint by Philippine artist MM Yu.
Annexe #02, held in August, boasted a 100% sell-through rate, with the joint-second highest sale turnout at the auction platform thus far. Out of 51 registered bidders, successful buyers comprised both new and returning bidders from Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore. The platform also raised close to USD18,000 for charity, which was donated to Yayasan Hati Suci, a Jakarta-based orphanage for girls.
Following The SG60 Sale Part II and Annexe #03, ANNEXE will round off the year-end sales season with two charity auctions. The first is For the Love of Cats, a sale of decorative and shipwreck ceramics donated by a generous cat-lover, to benefit the independent cat rescue group Look At These Cats. The second is A Charitable Christmas, an estate sale of a lady centred around celebration and charity, which will be revealed closer to the festive season.
