Art Jakarta Gardens 2026 will take place from 5 to 10 May at Hutan Kota by Plataran, Jakarta. The open-air art fair will bring together 26 galleries from Indonesia and beyond, with works presented in two tents, and throughout a sculpture garden. Set against the backdrop of Jakarta’s tropical landscape, the fair will complement works of art with public programmes that foster dialogue within the artistic community. This includes special performance art pieces by Sarita Ibnoe, Agus Nur Amal PM Toh and arts collective Swargaloka. In this preview article, we spoke to six participating galleries about the artworks they will be bringing to the fair.

D Gallerie brings together works exploring themes of materiality, identity and personal narratives. Exhibiting artists include Agus Baqul, Iwan Suastika, Kurt D Peterson, Maharani Mancanagara, Rangga Aputra, and Vicky Saputra. Ilham Nurjadin, Co-Director of D Gallerie, cites the intimate nature of the fair as a draw for his gallery to participate. He says, “The outdoor format creates conditions for artworks to be encountered differently than they would within a conventional fair booth or gallery space.” He continues, “There is a directness to the relationship between the work, its surroundings, and the public that we find particularly meaningful.”

In line with the fair’s sculptural theme, the gallery will be presenting Iwan Suastika’s life-sized Pilgrimage of Seed and the Child Who Carried Memory (2026) in the fair’s outdoor garden space. The work emerges from Suastika’s concern with ecological fragility and the erosion of memory. Depicting a child carrying a seed, the work highlights themes of inheritance, growth, and responsibility, while inviting visitors to consider more mindful ways of living.

Gajah Gallery, which has spaces in both Singapore and Jakarta, is returning to Art Jakarta Gardens for the fifth time with Plots of Perception. Mirroring the rich and multivaried nature of Southeast Asia, the gallery will feature 17 cross-generational artists in total. Founder Jasdeep Sandhu highlights the gallery’s strong curatorial strategies this year which responds directly to the fair’s unique setting. He says, “We anticipate another successful showcase this year as we bring a tightly curated roster of leading Southeast Asian artists where we foreground the technical rigor of their practices.”

Of note are emerging artists Kayleigh Goh and Dini Nur Aghnia, who will showcase their use of unconventional materials to transcribe memory and space. Yunizar, whose practice has been ongoing since the 1990s, will also have his playful works featured at both the booth and sculptural garden. In particular, his bold Kura Kura (Turtle) (2023) sculpture at the garden straddles both the natural and fantastical through its organic yet mythical form.

ISA Art Gallery will be presenting works by Arahmaiani, A. Sebastianus Hartanto, Ardi Gunawan, Galih Adika Paripurna, Ines Katamso, Jumaadi, Sillyndris, Yuki Nakayama among others. Entitled Methods of in/Tending, the presentation’s curatorial concept gestures at the multiplicity of practices the gallery will represent, with intention unfolding through process, material, and encounter.

Of note is Indonesian artist Audya Amalia’s sculptural work, 501 Hz (2026), which will be situated in the sculpture garden. Founder Deborah Iskandar is excited for audiences to encounter the work. She elaborates, “This presentation marks Audya’s first time developing an outdoor sculpture for Art Jakarta Gardens 2026, and will engage directly with the greenery the location is known for.” While the majority of their presentation will be at their booth, the gallery also intends to ground the rest of the works in the theme of  “the garden” through their treatment of, and responsiveness to the environment.

Bandung-based Galeri Ruang Dini will be representing a wide range of artists including Aulia Yeru, Dadan Setiawan, Eddie Hara, Siwi Andhika. A highlight from their selection are the works of Joko Avianto. Known for his large-scale bamboo installations, his process integrates traditional craft with contemporary sculptural techniques, while foregrounding issues of ecological degradation. Through his practice, he has developed a unique method of bending and shaping bamboo without fully splitting it, which he calls the “bamboo broke module”. For the fair, he will be presenting his work My Carbon Footprint is Wrapped in Bamboo (2025), which utilises an unconventional mix of resin, bamboo, and metal.

Alongside sculptural works, the gallery will also offer a vast selection of ink, acrylic and oil paintings, as well as print and photography works. They hope that their participation in the fair will open new in-roads for their represented artists within Indonesia and beyond.

Semarang Gallery

Semarang Gallery will be representing 11 artists at this year’s fair, including Edrike Joosencia, Norma Fauza, and Zulfa Zuppe. A highlight are the works of Yogyakarta-based Bestrizal Besta. Known for his mastery of charcoal, his largely achromatic works are rich in symbolism and figurative detail. He will be presenting a new work, Fragmentasi Memori dan Jiwa (2026), at the fair, exploring themes of psychology and spirituality.

The gallery views the fair as a good platform to also showcase new artists on top of established ones. Director Dennis Levy states, “This year we are bringing some of our emerging artists such as Gula, Esther Sutanto, and Edrike Joosencia. We hope to promote their new works to the collectors and Indonesian art community.” Having participated in Art Jakarta Gardens since its launch, they are confident in another successful iteration.

Can’s Gallery

Can’s Gallery will be presenting a selection of new works by emerging artists, including Gatot Indrajati, Rizal Hasan, and Naela Ali. Among them, Yogyakarta-based artist Suvi Wahyudianto is featured as one of the key artists at their booth. A recipient of the UOB Painting of the Year 2018 award, his practice uses what he calls “reduction”, a process of stripping away familiar markers, to arrive at the essential forms of identity and culture. Across his body of paintings and drawings, he moves through layers of personal memory as a means to study historical events. He will be presenting two works at the fair, Setelah luka kepada bunga (2026) and Penjaga malam (after Melankolia) (2026). The gallery will also be featuring a sculpture by Balinese artist Putu Sutawijaya, Kehidupan seperti naik pohon (2026), for its outdoor presentation.
